Ausgehend von Allan Sekulas Streitschrift “Dismantling modernism, reinventing documentary (Notes on the politics of representation)” (1979) beschäftigt sich dieser Workshop mit dem Zusammenhang von Fotografie und schriftlichem/gesprochenem Text in dokumentarischen Genres der 1970er und späten 1920er/1930er Jahre. Die Präsentationen stellen Material aus verschiedenen Forschungsprojekten des Graduiertenkollegs zur Diskussion. Der Workshop ist dabei offen für eine historische Perspektive über den umrissenen Zeitraum hinaus.
Inwiefern tragen Fotografien durch das Evozieren von Evidenz zur Faktualität von Texten bei? Wie können Wort und Bild sich in Fotobüchern ergänzen, widersprechen oder gegenseitig unterlaufen? Wie beeinflussen die Beschriftung von Bildern und Illustration von Texten die jeweilige Rezeption? Wie wirken Fotografie und gesprochener Kommentar im Essay- und Dokumentarfilm zusammen?

Tagung – Symmetry, Proportion and Seriality: The Semantics of Mirroring and Repetition in Science and the Arts
Symmetry is one of the key factors in a variety of sciences and humanities subjects. Equations must be symmetrical; in architecture symmetry is a basic design feature; linguists discover iconic and symmetrical relationships in their objects of study; in chemistry and physics symmetrical and asymmetrical designs play an important role; in music and all the arts symmetry is often considered the basis of aesthetic quality. There are also several types of symmetry that one might want to distinguish. Symmetry can be set off against, but also paired with, two other features that play a similar role in the sciences and the arts: proportion and seriality. Exact symmetry in some instances is too neat, too boring, or simply not possible, yet a set of proportional relationships may be deemed crucial to a particular effect. Proportion can thus be regarded as a more general framework that allows one to set items in relationships to one another, with symmetry being the most perfect of these relationships. The visual arts, especially film and dance, employ proportion and symmetry as kinetic rather than merely static modes. As regards seriality, it is a recursive application of symmetry and repetition, but also a type of design that operates dynamically rather than statically. Besides its obvious relevance to the arts in experiments in seriality in (post)modernist painting, music and literature, seriality plays a central role in mathematics and physics.
The high-profile speakers at this conference come from a wide range of discipline and they share a commitment to
cross-disciplinary dialogue. They will compare concepts of symmetry, proportion and seriality across the humanities-sciences divide; they will explore the historical dimensions and changes in taste that affect the understanding of these terms and concepts; they will discuss them as culture-specific phenomena, comparing ideas of symmetry and proportion across different global cultures; finally, they will explore why it is that symmetry is so important to our minds and our language, indeed to the design of our bodies and brains.
The conference is organized into three sections, each starting off with a plenary lecture and extended plenary discussions between speakers from different disciplines. Speakers at this conference include scholars from the fields of musicology, theoretical physics, literary studies, art history, neuroscience, and theatre and performance studies.

Doing Digital Humanities
Bridging the Gap between Quantitative and Qualitative Methods

One of the most controversial aspects of the rise of the so-called “digital humanities” has been the strong focus on quantitative methods, which were introduced as a challenge to traditional research paradigms (such as Moretti’s call for ‘distant reading’ to replace the deeply entrenched method of ‘close reading’). While some scholars have embraced the opportunities created by the new media, others have cautioned against giving up or diluting disciplinary fields of expertise. Are we missing out on new research questions and research fields by sticking to more ‘traditional’ idioms of research? Or can we only lose when literary scholars trained in high theory or historical materialism suddenly try to become ad hoc statistics experts?
In this workshop, we will look beyond the apparent division into different camps and ask how traditional and new approaches may fruitfully be combined in the study of narrative phenomena. What are low-threshold ways of integrating computer-based methods into theoretically or hermeneutically oriented studies? Can scholars of narrative play to their specific disciplinary strengths while at the same time benefitting from the transdisciplinary horizon offered by the digital humanities? Which new subjects and perspectives are opened up by such fusions? What are the dangers engendered by a ‘pick and mix’ approach to methods, and how might they be mitigated? And how will the new technological possibilities affect the ways in which we publish and disseminate our results? The study of narrative is an ideal testing ground for new methodologies that attempt to bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative research. On the one hand, narrative theory in the tradition of literary studies is a home turf of elaborate and versatile close reading practices. On the other hand, the ‘postclassical’ broadening of the focus to include oral and nonfictional narratives has further fuelled an interest in the use of ‘big data’. With its focus on new transmedial and interdisciplinary approaches to narrative and its range from history, psychology and sociology to cultural and literary studies and philosophy, the graduate school “Factual and Fictional Narration” offers an ideal environment for such a conversation.
In the workshop, scholars from literary studies, linguistics, classical philology and sociology will reflect on the impact of the digital turn on the humanities and introduce ongoing projects as case studies for ways of integrating old and new methods.
