Reading Games

ReadingGames.jpg... as in "we are reading games," not as if a series of gamified reading sessions – is a book club for video games instead of books!

The club meets on a monthly basis, to talk about selected games, from an interdisciplinary perspective, including Cultural Studies and literary approaches. In order to join, you don't have to have any level of knowledge about video games, or define yourself as a "gamer." That term is becoming as meaningful as a term like "movie-goer" in today's world, where digital games are everywhere as cultural products. Please come prepared, i.e. play the game, and/or watch a video of someone else who is playing it for you.

The selected reading for these sessions is recommended to participants who want to engage with the selectedgameson a more critical level. Delicious Pixels introduces critical food studies to game scholarship, showing the unique ways in which food is utilized in both video game gameplay and narrative to show that food is never just food but rather a complex means of communication and meaning-making. It aims at bringing the academic attention to digital food and to show how significant it became in the recent decades as, on the one hand, a world-building device, and, on the other, a crucial link between the in-game and out-of-game identities and experiences. This is done by examining specifically the examples of games in which food serves as the means of creating an intimate, cozy, and safe world and a close relationship between the players and the characters.
