• Completed Lehramt Bachelor's degree from a German university with a major in English or an equivalent (at least three-year) degree program at a German or foreign university
  
• German language skills at a C1 level
• English language skills at a B2 level
• Knowledge of a further modern language (B2 level) or Latinum
• Online-Selbstreflexion Lehramtsstudium und Lehrer*innenberuf (OSEL) or an equivalent orientation process for a Lehramt program at another German university

• I am currently completing a Double-Major Bachelor degree and would like to apply for admission to the Master of Education program next semester. The application portal requires an English Language Certificate. I will be certified thanks to my current, soon to be finished, Bachelor's degree. I have selected this option in the drop-down menu, but the system still requires me to upload a document for certification. What should I upload?

Program Content

English and American studies as a discipline focuses in research and teaching on the language, literature, and culture of the English-speaking world, from its beginnings to the present day.

English literary studies are concerned with questions of literary theory and comparative literature as applied to the history of English and North American literature, but also takes account of other English-speaking literatures.

English linguistics is concerned with questions of linguistic theory as applied to the English language, its history, and the current state of its development. Particular attention is paid to British and American English, earlier varieties of English (old and middle English) as well as other standard and non-standard English variants.

English cultural studies is concerned with the sociocultural characteristics of and connections between English-speaking countries and their cultural products, with particular attention paid to underlying social structures. Through variable use of multiple disciplinary perspectives, cultural studies offers strong interdisciplinary characteristics. It combines insights from literary studies, media studies, linguistics, history, film and theatre studies, art and art history, economics, communications, and the broader humanities.

Furthermore, an important part of the curriculum focuses on practical English language competency. The program offers students to improve their already very strong English proficiency to a near-native level.

General Information

The Master of Education for secondary-school teaching is designed as a full-time course of studies. The program consists of two majors with corresponding didactics courses (27 ECTS each), educational studies (35 ECTS), a student teaching appointment (16 ECTS) and a master's thesis written in one of the two majors or in educational studies (15 ECTS).

The English department's programs at the University of Freiburg are distinguished by their optimal student-to-faculty ratio, leading to generally small course sizes–ideal conditions for focused studies.

ECTS

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standard for measuring the expected workload that's necessary for students to successfully meet learning outcomes. For successfully completed studies, ECTS credits are awarded. 1 ECTS point represents 30 hours of work, and each student should spend 1200 hours/yr for their major and 400 for the minor. The ECTS is designed to make the structure of tertiary education, as well as its associated workload, more transparent. Through the accumulation of ECTS points, the system simplifies the documentation of each student's progress.
